Talk: Antenna Radiation Measurement: From Anechoic Chambers to Drone-Based On-Site Measurements (Senior researcher, Fengchun Zhang, Aalborg University, Denmark)

This presentation examines the methods and challenges of antenna radiation measurement, tracing the evolution from traditional laboratory setups to emerging drone-based on-site approaches. The discussion begins with the fundamentals of antenna radiation patterns, describing how antenna gain varies in three-dimensional space through key parameters such as main lobes, side lobes, nulls, and half-power beamwidth. The importance of these characteristics for the design, optimization, and verification of cellular networks, satellite communication systems, and radar applications is highlighted.

The presentation then introduces the anechoic chamber as the conventional benchmark for antenna measurements. As a controlled, reflection-free environment shielded from external interference, anechoic chambers employ RF-absorbing materials to enable highly repeatable and weather-independent measurements. Despite these advantages, they also present significant limitations, including high infrastructure costs, physical size constraints when testing electrically large antennas, and the inability to fully capture the effects of real-world deployment environments.

These limitations motivate the transition toward drone-based on-site measurement, which brings antenna characterization directly into operational settings. The talk explores the key challenges associated with this approach, including positioning accuracy, multipath propagation, synchronization, and flight stability, while presenting potential solutions and mitigation techniques that enable reliable airborne measurements.

By bridging the gap between laboratory precision and field realism, drone-based measurement methods have the potential to transform how antennas are tested, characterized, and validated in an era of increasingly complex and densely deployed wireless infrastructure.

Bio:

Fengchun Zhang obtained her Bachelor’s degree in optical information science and technology in 2006 and her Master’s degree in acoustics in 2009, both from the South China University of Technology in Guangzhou, China. She completed her Ph.D. at Aalborg University, Denmark, in 2019. She continued her academic career at Aalborg University’s Department of Electronic Systems, first as a Postdoctoral Researcher from 2019 to 2022, then as an Assistant Professor from 2022 to 2026. She currently holds the position of Senior Researcher (equivalent to the rank of Associate Professor under the Danish academic title framework) at the same department.

Her publication record includes over 50 peer-reviewed journal papers, more than 20 conference contributions, and 5 patents and inventor reports. Her research spans antenna array signal processing, radio channel modeling and emulation, as well as over-the-air (OTA) testing for antenna systems.
